Tolerance. Why Should You Care? Are we soon to face the end of the world? Maybe. Is the apocalypse coming? You know, the typical zombies, destruction, natural disasters … the works. As of May 25th 2020, circumstances are looking pretty grim. So grim, in fact, that the national guard was activated in twenty-one states, and rioting erupted in at least one hundred forty cities across the U.S. What is the cause of all this, you may ask? The answer is simple. Lack of tolerance. One main problem of today is that society faces controversy within itself. This controversy is slowly tearing us apart. People are all different, they look and think differently. Because of this, there is a lot of diversity. Many different thoughts and opinions are being circulated throughout the world. It is up to us, as a society, to be tolerant. Recently, however, we have been failing in this task. Destruction and violence tear holes in our cities, and online, major platforms such as Twitter and Facebook are canceling people with political beliefs that differ from what is considered “politically-correct.”. This silencing has not been contained within social platforms; intolerance is leaking into the entertainment industry. For example, Gina Carano was kicked off The Mandalorian for having political beliefs that differed from society’s expectations. There are so many different thoughts and opinions being circulated throughout the world. Since there is so much diversity in our world today, where people of many different backgrounds are living in one area, establishing tolerance and harmony is very important. Each of us may have different opinions about the people around us, but it is vital that we maintain a safe environment for our community. Today, in a world filled with instant communication and fast travel, it is easy to develop negative feelings towards each other. Emotions can be volatile and potent, with people quick to unleash their bias against others when they have not taken the time to get to know them. Online, it is easy to hide behind a computer screen and a pseudonym and say terrible things to other people. Common decency prevents people saying these things in person. Most people have not experienced the consequences of speaking freely over the internet, but this reckless behavior can destroy friendships and can lead to unexpected consequences. Nowadays, people readily blame others, never seeing the fault in themselves. Their view is completely one-sided, always quick to see the impurities in other people, and completely passing over the gaps in their own perception. We, instead of aiming to improve our society, turn to hate. If our goal is to create a community with a decreasing number of divisive rifts and more tolerance, we need to take action. To demonstrate that you are a good, decent human being, show tolerance. It will work out for you in the long run. People that think or look completely different than what you are used to can turn out to be valuable, loyal friends. All it takes is a little bit of tolerance. Tolerance is the key to a better, more fulfilling life. People will enjoy your company and want to be around you. In addition, you will also be contributing to the betterment of society. In the end, no matter how we perceive politics, or the world in general, we know that our individual outlooks are what make this country strong. Diversity is not partial to race. It is our differing thoughts, opinions, and perspectives that bring color to the cloth of our society. However, if you are one of those people who thinks anything that is different should be shunned, my advice is this: look inside yourself and make a change. It is not difficult to keep your opinions to yourself while you thoughtfully consider the opinions of others. Our lives will be much better when we learn to find unity and understanding.
